Check out this amazing door!

I have never seen a door like this before, and I doubt that the entrance to Diagon Alley from Harry Potter was not as cool as this.
This wave of a door was created by Matharoo Associates for some diamond merchant of India. It will open to reveal a wave-like shape that will reconfigure into a sinusoidal curve when any one section is pushed upon.
The door is about 17 feet tall, and uses a counterweight with 80 ball bearings and 160 pulleys to create this awesome effect.
As I mentioned before, this door was created for diamond merchant in India. I would say that if you ever put this door anywhere, then what is behind it had better be darned impressive. I'm talking about some serious treasure behind it.
Normally, if I was doing a report like this, I would probably say something like "enjoy the video after the jump". Alas, I don't seem to have video footage of this today.
I wish that I did, because I want to see if someone could actually get into the door from the bottom while it remains closed on the top. That, or whether you could climb the door like some sort of stairwell if it was half open. Either way, it is quite cool.

Inbrela Collapsible Umbrella

For those of you who happen to stay in an area where there is plenty of rain throughout the year, it goes without saying that you ought to always have an umbrella handy somewhere – in your car, at the office and at home. Just in case, you know. With global warming happening, the weather sure gets crazy this time around. Unfortunately, wet umbrellas can be a pain to store especially when indoors, which is why the Inbrela Collapsible Umbrella could come in handy. This umbrella will be able to fold into the tube itself – making your car stay nice and dry, while making it a snap to get in and out of cars with but a simply push. When pushed open, the Inbrela will pop out of its tube and opens away from your face. Pull it back into the tube to close for dry surroundings. Don't worry about its sturdiness – it is made out of flexible aluminum ribs that will not snap even in the wind. The Inbrela Collapsible Umbrella will retail for $29.99 each.

Rechargeable LED Bulb becomes flashlight

Power going out is just a part of life.  Storms hit and power lines sometimes go down and it's even worse if you're living outside of town.  This rechargeable LED bulb may function as a normal bulb most of the time, but it has extra features that'll keep you feeling safe and secure even during bad storms.
These were created by a Chinese company called Magic Bulb that decided to show off their creation at IFA.  These bulbs use all of 4 watts of power while shining as brightly as a 50W bulb.  Within each bulb is a rechargeable battery that'll keep the light running for up to 3 hours in the event of a power outage.  If you need to run around and inspect the source of your power troubles these bulbs also have a handle that can be extended to turn the bulb into a flashlight.  They'll live for up to 20,000 hours.  They're hoping to sell these for $30-$40.  That may seem like a lot for an ordinary light bulb, but you don't really need to absolutely fill your home with these versatile bulbs.

Sink And Urinal In One

At first I wasn't the most thrilled over the idea of someone peeing and washing your hands in the same place.  Honestly, once you really think it through although it is odd, it would save on space and spending money on multiple fixtures in bathrooms.  Plus, it couldn't be much more unsanitary than washing your hands right next to the toilet, which is the case in most bathrooms.
On the bottom of it all is a urinal then up top is the sink.  The water that you use to wash your hands is used to wash out the urinal.  With that extra design quality it'll help to save on water, which could really cut down on the bill for any large establishment like a restaurant.  This was a iF Concept Design winning entry and for good reason.  It was designed by Yeongwoo Kim.

Tapi Tap Squeeze Drink Fountain

I have often voiced my love for simple gadgets.  It's far more popular to have a gadget that just does it all, but every now and then it just gets tiring.  Sometimes you just want to use a simple device that always simply follows through on its chosen task.  There's no 20 page booklet or numerous online tutorials to tell you how to run it, it just works.  Tapi is another one of those simple devices.
This doesn't filter your water or turn pretty colors depending on the temperature of the water.  No, it just allows for you to drink water comfortably out of the faucet.  Just about everyone has had that desperate moment where they resort to drinking out of the faucet rather than cleaning a glass.  Well instead of trying to fit your head under the faucet you just slip this rubber tap onto the faucet.  To get the fountain to work just squeeze the bottom and the water will shoot out of the top.  The Dreamfarm product is supposed to be shipping out in August of this year.  These don't appear to be available online, but you can punch your town into the store locator to find where these are sold.

Running barefoot is the new trend

These are some interesting shoes/socks that you might have seen before.
They look a lot like aqua-socks, except they have room for the toes in their design. Apparently, "running without shoes can strengthen your feet, ankles, and lower legs and improve balance". Now we know why Frodo and Sam never wore any shoes.
Apparently, they have been on celebrities like Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum, and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George wears them for beach football. Also, the Vibram FiveFingers are so popular is having a difficult time keeping them in stock, and there are knock-off brands coming out of the woodwork.
I suppose these are the shoes for those who really long for the experience of running barefoot. However, it isn't for people who are just starting to run or returning from a long layoff, and you need to ease in slowly. There are those who think these five-toed shoes aren't worth your time or money, and others that swear up and down by them.
Right now, I would like to hear from our readers. If you have tried these five-toed shoes, and have either good or bad results, let us know. Also, can you answer me this question: can you stub your toe with these guys on?

Mini Cupcake Factory

Cupcakes seem to be all the rage these days, as they offer a different kind of pastry appeal to the masses. Even weddings have evolved to shun the traditional wedding cake, relying on cupcakes instead to keep guests happy. Well, if you have a penchant for whipping up something delicious in the kitchen, how about giving the Mini Cupcake Factory a go? Retailing for just $19.99 a pop, they will definitely appeal to the geek since it is small and cute, featuring an extremely high crust-to-cake ratio thanks to its small nature. Featuring an outer layer of extra caramelized batter, it will soak up some of the oil during the baking process. The cupcakes themselves will cook in a mere 5 minutes, and if you throw in the time spent mixing and heating the cupcake pan, it takes a grand total of just 10 minutes. Each round of cooking will net you 7 cupcakes in total. Hungry already?

Candle Powered Fireflow Lava Lamp & Lighted Beach Ball

I remember having a lava lamp that slowly warmed the lava and moved it about.  However, mine actually had a light bulb on the inside.  This lava lamp can even be used while you're camping, since it doesn't even require a bulb or to be plugged in.  Instead this lava lamp goes for the lo-tech approach.  To warm up the lava it only requires a handy little tea light, making it possible to take it wherever your heart desires.
If you need a quirky light for your patio, then this could work just as easily.  It's the very first lava lamp to actually be powered by a tea light.  The retro lamp comes in 4 different colors, including pink, purple, turquoise and green.  The rest of it features cast zinc alloy base and bottle cap, plus a chrome plated finish.  Then the glass bottle is filled with that famous super secret lava.  With that small tea candle it can run for 3 hours, which is about the usual burn time for one tea light candle.  You can pick it up for $29.99 through Think Geek.

Light Up Beach Ball

Going to the beach during the day is extremely fun as the whole family (as well as friends, of course) will be able to have a swimmingly good time bonding together with some picnic and chit chat, apart from getting an appropriate tan, of course. Well, what happens when you decide to hold a beach BBQ? The situation can also be fun, as you keep your entire entourage's stomachs filled with lovely food apart from having fun by playing with the Light Up Beach Ball. This £7.95 ball features the ability to change its color with each bounce, making it ideal for parties and general fun. Good thing it comes with batteries to get you started right out of the box. When fully inflated, it measures 40cm in diameter.

Heads-up Virtual Reality (HUVR) Project at UC San Diego

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 04:29 PM PDT

This is a project going on a the University of California, San Diego. They call it the Heads-Up Virtual Reality device, or HUVR (pronounced like the word "hover"). I call it awesome.
HUVR "couples a consumer 3D HDTV panel with a half-silvered mirror to project any graphic image onto the user's hands and/or into the space surrounding them". Apparently, the user's head is tracked in order to get the correct perspective, and there is a haptic feedback device on hand for manipulation. I noticed that their haptic device looks a lot like a Novint Falcon, which I believe was designed for 3D gaming.
I have a video of this after the jump if you want to see this in action. Personally, I think that the possibilities for this technology are limitless. For example, medical researchers can use this for 3D manipulation of brainscans from an MRI. Archaeologists can use this handle an artifact that is too precious to be handled with the hands-on approach.
Best of all, this technology has come relatively cheap. It uses a $2,300 Samsung 3D TV and a heads up virtual reality system that costs $7,000. I look forward to the day when it costs as much as a desktop computer. I can totally see desktop and possibly even laptop computers being like this.

Pen can do shredding and invisible writing

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 04:08 PM PDT

This is the "Paper Lacerating Pen", and it has many features. At least two more than the average pen.
First of all, it allows you to write messages or anything else in "invisible letters". Then, with the LED light on top, you can shine on what you have written and have a secret be revealed. I wonder if it is like that thing from the Da Vinci Code.
Not only can you write down coded messages, but you can shred them after you are finished. Yes, this pen actually has a paper shredder built right in. Granted, it looks like you can only shred things that are less than two inches wide, but hey, how many other pens can say they come with a shredder? Take that, Bic!
I suppose that the best use of this product is a toy. Unless you have a spy agency. Just think about how an agent can leave another agent a message on a small piece of paper with this pen. Then the other agent, who also has this pen, can read the message, and then shred it!
Oddly enough, my Source did not link to the company that makes these. I ran a search on "Paper Lacerating Pen" and it was also fruitless. I could easily see this marketed as something that Spy Gear would make.

Treehouse in Sweeden is nearly invisible

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 03:42 PM PDT

This is the Tree Hotel, designed by Swedish architects Tham and Videgard. As you can see, it is nearly invisible as it is a box made of mirrors.
It was once a concept that others mocked, saying it was "computer-generated eye candy, impossible to build, and death for birds". There is apparently a special film that is visible to birds and applied to the glass.
As you might have guessed, it is a somewhat eco-friendly resort. It was constructed from sustainably harvested wood, has an electric radiant floor heating and a state-of-the-art incineration toilet.
The designers want to maintain the beauty of this untouched forest, and they are on record as saying:
"This is untouched forest, and we want to maintain it the same way. We decided, for example, to not offer snowmobile safari which is very common up here," says Selberg. Instead, wilderness walks will be offered.
This is one of apparently six mirrored cubes that is planned to be built at this location, and it is located about 40 miles south of the Arctic Circle.
I certainly wouldn't mind staying here, but I hope that it stays warm in the wintertime. Something tells me that the snow would make this mirrored cube very visible. I hope the architects took these factors into account. Let's just say they did.

Mac Keyboard turned into USB drive

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 02:00 PM PDT

The serious Mac fans out there can't help but show their fanboy side just every now and then.  Well if you are one of those fans then you might enjoy this USB drive.  Especially since carrying around this drive means you've rescued a little bit of plastic from making it to the nearest landfill.  It never hurts to be just a little extra eco-friendly from time to time.
The drive is made by using old recycled keys straight from a MacBook.  Within the drive itself is 4GB of storage space for you to transport all of your important files.  Beyond that it's a pretty basic drive.  To pick one up it'll cost you $60 through Etsy, which truthfully is a little steep.  At least you'll get to show off your Mac loving side.

Remote Controlled Water Soaker

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 01:00 PM PDT

Swimways offers all sorts of fun gadgets for out in the pool.  One of them has already made it onto Coolest Gadgets and this one is just as awesome as the last.  The other one was a game that required you to dive and search for the gadget as fast as possible.  This one allows you to attack just about anyone that happens to come within shooting distance of the pool.  This is the absolute perfect gift to give someone else's kids for them to torture their parents with.
The toy comes with a water-resistant radio controller that will work whether it's in or out of the water.  The soaker itself is capable of shooting up to 20 feet away.  That'll make it possible to shoot at all sorts of people unwilling to dive into the pool themselves.  To keep it powered it has a battery and a charger that are included with the package deal.  You can pick up the Swimways R/C Water Soaker in either orange or green for $39.21 through Amazon.

Box Cooler Backpack

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 12:31 PM PDT

It's tough making sure you always have cold drinks on you.  It's especially tough going to different festivals where it's extremely hot and the drinks are far overpriced while also being heavily watered down.  Thankfully there is this backpack that looks like nothing more than a backpack, that can easily be slung over your shoulder.  With this around it won't be quite so obvious that you're carrying around your own personal stash of drinks.
The canvas is completely waterproof and the cooler itself is removable.  Within the cooler it'll hold 18 of your normal-sized 12oz cans.  It also has a zippered cellphone holder to make sure you can keep your phone handy.  It has extra padding for your back and waist straps that are filled with padding as well.  It comes in the color scheme shown here and doesn't come in any other colors.  You can purchase the Chilly Box Cooler Backpack for $42.95 through Family Travel Gear.

iSafe Bag with built-in alarm

Posted: 25 Jul 2010 05:58 PM PDT

When kids are sent off to school, be it elementary, high school or college, parents are going to worry.  It just comes with the territory.  However, if you feel your kids could come into harm there are gadgets out there to help them out.  One of them is this iSafe bookbag that has a built-in alarm directly in the strap.  If the child is in trouble and needs help they can just activate the alarm to get the person that's scaring the child to run off.
These bags come in all sorts from messenger bags to backpacks on up to laptop bags.  They even have bags specifically designed for girls that love their pink.  The alarm gets set off by pulling on a pin in the strap and doesn't stop until the pin is put back.  The rest of the bag is just like any other bag out there.  You can purchase them for anywhere from $60 on up to about $100.  It is a little pricey for a child's backpack, but at least it'll help you stay calm.
